The last couple of posts have been poking around in Scripture and I don’t want to give the impression to casual visitors, who don’t check the archives, that Biblical stuff is all that is treated on this site. Here is a trifle as a goodbye to Bible discussion for a while.
These items have been in my notebooks for ages and I don’t know where any of them came from. Only some of the stuff about the number 153 is due to my own investigations.
Maybe you have friends who quote Scripture at you. When you phone and get their answering machine just say “Isaiah 50, verse 2, first sentence.” They will likely look it up to find
“Wherefore when I came was there no man? When I called was there none to answer?”
How many books in the King James Bible? Easy to remember.
3 x 9 = 27 the number of books in the New Testament. 3 and 9, giving 39, the number of books in the Old Testament.
Shortest verse: Jesus wept (John 11:35) Rejoice evermore is also two words but is longer in English letters. In the Greek testament Rejoice evermore has two letters less than Jesus wept.
Longest verse is in Esther 8:9 I counted 88 words, but I’ve had cataract surgery.
Longest name: Maher-shalal-hash-baz Isaiah 8:1 Means hasten-booty, speed-spoil. A prophecy that Damascus and Samaria would be plundered by the king of Assyria.
Tallest man was probably Og, King of Bashan who slept in a bed 9 cubits long. Deut 3:11
The famous giant Goliath was only 6 cubits and a span tall 1 Sam 17:4
Less serious…Smallest man was possibly Habakkuk who said in Hab 2:1 I will stand upon my watch.
Smallest animals: two contestants depending on your spelling ability, The Widow’s Mite in Mark 12:42 and the wicked flea Prov 28:1
There are several quite famous anagrams:
NAOMI…I MOAN,
TEN COMMANDMENTS…CAN’T MEND MOST MEN,
SILVER AND GOLD (Deut 17:17)… GRAND OLD EVILS,
THE WAGES OF SIN IS DEATH (Rom 6:23)…HIGH FEES OWED SATANIST
Largest integer: 200,000,000 (Rev 9:16)
Smallest: 1 (1st day, Gen 1:5)
Smallest integer NOT mentioned 43
666 The number of talents of gold given to Solomon 1 Kings 10:14
666 nnmber of children of Adonikan Ezra 2:13
666 Mark of the Beast Rev 13:18. Easy to remember…Revelation is the 66th book. Thirteen is the number of the Death card in Tarot. Eighteen is 6+6+6
The King James Bible has 1189 chapters, counting Psalms as chapters. The middle of the Bible is Psalm 117, which is chapter 595. It is the shortest chapter with only 33 words, so the middle one is the 17th, the word “is”
Mrs. Ellen Gould White was a founding visionary of the Seventh Day Adventists. She had lots of visions, and with 140 different languages translating her works is way up there among the most published women on spiritual matters. Her visions produce some interesting arithmetic for the curious. Everyone who has read Revelations knows that the number of saints is 144,000. The lady had a vision of all the saints standing in a perfect square, on a sea of glass. Therefore there were 379.4738 saints on each side.
Later on in her Great Controversy between Christ and Satan she spoke of a hollow square with Jesus in the midst. Mathematically of course, if the central square was also hollow there are 36 different ways to do this, so that if a is the side of the outer square and b is the side of the inner square then:
The smallest possible value of 'a' that is possible is 380, so the hollow square is 20 saints square. There is a great deal more about her visions in my notes but that will do.
The Sacred Number 17 has a great deal of interesting references in Scripture, if you read between the lines as all good readers do. Prime numbers have always been sacred, and 17 is the seventh prime number, therefore the holiest prime. Everything to do with 17 is likely to be special.
Augustine did a bit of beginner’s numerology and said that it represented the 10 commandments from the Old Testament and the 7 gifts of spirit from the New, thus forming a bridge across the Scriptures.
More interesting is the precision of the number of fish caught in John 21:11. The disciples were ordered by an unrecognized Jesus to let their empty net down one more time. They did, and caught 153 fish. Add all the integers 1 thru 17 and you get 153. Maybe this number is worth a look. Add in the Holy Trinity, cube each number and get
which is interesting. But take ANY number with three different digits, cube each one and add them, and keep doing it with the result you get. Eventually you always get back to 153.
Now the New Testament was in Greek, and in the Greek gematria the name Magdalene adds up to 153, leading some people to think this was a Da Vinci code type clue for the alert. Some think that Mary Magdalene, the wife of Jesus, was His choice to run the show after He left. The bone-headed Peter however won the political battle eventually. The Church would certainly have a different history if the Pope had been female.
But that isn’t all. In mathematics a continued product, written 4! is short for 4 x 3 x 2 x 1, and 3! means 3 x 2 x 1. It’s just a mathematical shorthand. Well, we applied the Trinity to 153 with interesting results, how about the right hand of God? Assuming that God has five fingers on the hand it is interesting that
5! + 4! + 3! + 2! + 1! = 120 + 24 + 6 + 2 + 1 = 153
Even the current gospels reflect this amazing number. In the New Testament order we see that Matthew has 28 chapters, Mark has 16, Luke has 24 and John has 21
Write these down as a simple problem in fractions
28/16 divided by 24/21 = 21/24 divided by 16/28
Writing the answer as a decimal we see that both sets give the same result which is 1.53125. And the first three digits are our number 153 and the last three are the number 125 which is 1 x 5 cubed our number 153 again.
AND NONE OF THIS HAS ANY SIGNIFICANCE WHATEVER!!!
